Slow Internet ?????

Post by joegoo420 » Thu Feb 22, 2007 5:07 pm

I was wondering what some of you guys use to protect your PC, I had a bad experience today.

My internet has gotten dramatically slower in the last little while, so I do the norm and call shaw and tell them to fix it or I will close my account. They asked what I use for internet security, and I told them (Norton 07). They then directed me to trendmicro's website and asked if I would do a free online virus and spyware/adware scan for them just to make sure.

Now I keep my anti-virus and all that shit up to date all the time, as most ppl do. I run the free scan and to my surprise I have 27 spyware & virus issues to be resolved with 20% of the scan still to go.
Now why wouldn't the $70 Norton package I have used and trusted for years have caught all that shit ???????

Baffled yes but most certainly will be switching to PCcillin.

If any of you guys have problems with your internet or PC performance, or are simply just curious as to how well your antivirus and firewall programs work try this out. Free scan

Well to tell you the truth there is no one application that can protect your computer from all the ugly viruses, malware and trojans from the internet and personal I don't believe in spending $70 for a internet security package that is only valid for one year and then I have to dish out another $20-$30 dollars to renew the fricken subscription :x .

The best defence is to have a good anti-virus (recommend AVG its free) and a spybot removal tool like Spybot Search&Destory (which is free). Also another very simple way to protect your computer from outside attacks is to place a network router (D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc...) between your cable/dsl modem and computer. This will basically mask your computer from possible outside attacks. Now you could also install a firewall on your computer, but if you don't know what you're doing it will cause you more grief then relief. But if you want a firewall I would recommend ZoneAlarm. Its a trusted firewall program and it's also free.

Now evening with all those app's I recommended to help protect your computer. The #1 thing that can help protect your computer is make sure the crap you download is legit. Peer to Peer filesharing app's like Limewire, Kazza, etc are know to be risky as some people get kicks from modifying a MP3 songs, movie files, and porno with trojans or other malware.

P.S.

A good site to down these programs is from www.download.com.

stop downloading porn joe! ;)

I have been running a free virus program called avast (avast.com)... I think they still have a free personal version if you register or something.

Rule #1: if you don't download shite, you won't get viruses. They come as attachments (email), jpegs (yes, viruses can even be in jpgs), *mp3*s <- number 1 culprit, i guarantee it, firesharing period. If you download, you better have a better scanner than norton (norton's always missed stuff). I have no complaints about avast, and have used others but they all want money sooner or later.

Rule #2: get a router. D-link is the best IMO. 2 minute setup (yes I've owned cisco/linksys blah blah they all suck). Set up a router...all foreign/unsolicited requests are dropped, period. So if you don't download it/request it with a browser or otherwise, it don't get on yo puta.

Rule #3: if you don't trust it, don't download it. EA is probably trustable, you won't get worm32.somethingorother from the latest bf2142 patch, but you most likely will from parishiltonsexvideo.

Rule #4: Stop using Internet explorer period. By default IE allows programs from your computer to access the internet using standard http protocol unless you disable it (you should look into this). Get firefox, its faster, cooler, did I say faster? hundreds of extensions, and it doesn't suck. (I wanted to make sure you got the point from my experience as a developer: it doesn't suck)

Rule #5: Windows updates. If you can't remember the last time you updated...well, case in point. Microsoft may suck, but until EA releases the BF2 port to ubuntu, get used to it.

Rule #6: if you can't stop downloading porn (for health or other reasons), then at least tell the truth and say...

Well I have downloaded over 30 gigs of music, in the past year and loads of shit from file planet. As for porn I haven't dl'd very much at all at least none that wasn't paid for legitamately. So I have a feeling it wasn't from the porn, however the suspicious content did get in some how some way.

Anyways I did all that and my internet is still fucked right up, so i will lay the smackdown on the shaw tech who shows up at my house tommorow.

LOL I'm sorry to hear that you've had such bad luck with porn downloads Paul. Was it for health or other reasons that you had to quit ???????

Masterbator's anonymous ??? Is that even a support group ??????

Thanks for the help anway.

I will have it known that all my porn downloads were strictly in the interests of conducting research for people with slow internet connections...

*purely* professional! ;)

Actually, 99% of all virus problems I've ever had was either an mp3 or a keygen (don't download much of either anymore...)

Norton is bad anyway. You'll be better off.

Its such a resource hog. I use nothing but free anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.

I use Avast currently, but I have used AVG in the past as well, both fairly decent programs.

Run this joe.

AVAST.COM......format the drive, go get AVAST and SpyBlaster ...both free and you'll never complain again. My kids download everything known to mankind and it has stopped viruses dead! No Spyware or Viruses in my computers for over 3 years now. By the way I hate Norton, McAfee & Julia Roberts.
